Laboratory of Advanced Materials, Structures and Digitization

The Laboratory for Advanced Materials, Structures and Digitization (LAMSD) is active in the analysis and design of materials, structures, machines and systems through computational and experimental methods. It focuses on Industry 4.0 technologies such as Additive Manufacturing, Digital Twins, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML), Internet of Things (IoT) and their applications in engineering and technology. The laboratory supports the development of innovative methodologies and tools to improve next-generation materials and structures and actively participates in national and European research projects. The activity of the laboratory spans several areas, such as:
• Analysis and design of advanced materials, structures and systems for aerospace, mechanical, structural and industrial applications.
• Digital manufacturing technologies, with emphasis on Additive Manufacturing and the use of computer simulations for optimized design.
• Computational methods and simulations to promote Industry 4.0 and intelligent systems.
• Investigation and development of smart structures with embedded functional properties, such as morphing and programmable materials.
• Big data management and analysis and AI for the optimisation of technical processes, production and maintenance.
The laboratory supports the educational activities of undergraduate courses such as, Satellite Systems and Subsystems II, Materials in Aerospace Technology and Computational Methods in Aerospace Science and houses the activities of PhD theses, as well as undergraduate and graduate theses and projects. The laboratory maintains close collaborations with international universities, research centres and industry and has received funding from national industrial and European programmes such as Horizon Europe.
